August 2008

A Banjo, Two Books, and One Crazy Writer!

I will be reading an original story about our crazy town - and I'm namin' names - at Tome on the Range during the next Second Saturday Artwalk, September 13th, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

I will also read from my memoir, "Don't Shoot! I'm Just the Avon Lady!" as well as from my story in the new anthology of mommy bloggers, "Sleep is for the Weak."

Book signings will commence following the readings.

I have some surprises, too! Expect the unusual, the fun, the warbling strange, including a sing-a-long with me on banjo where I will teach you a song I wrote about Las Vegas, New Mexico.

This is NOT your typical author event!

I hope to see YOU there! You won't regret it....

If you drop me an email before the event signaling your intention to attend, I will have a surprise waiting for you at the reading...

Attention Artists (of all kinds) of Las Vegas, New Mexico!

Chicken River Artists is my answer to all the requests I've had to start a comprehensive Las Vegas Artists' Directory. This is a great directory - with a social networking twist! I have to thank my dear friends Kevin and Al for giving me the idea (they don't know they gave me the idea, but they did).

All artists, artisans, writers, performers, musicians, gallery owners, photographers, and persons interested in the local art scene are welcome to join.

Chicken River Artists allows all users to fully participate in the community. You can:

  • Upload a cute avatar
  • Post as many blogs as you like
  • Fill out your profile with your artist information
  • Connect with new and old friends
  • Leave fun messages for others at their "Cork Board"
  • Showcase your art with a photo album
  • Let others know about  gallery openings, concerts, and other events
  • Share written files

All information is available to the public so that outsiders can enjoy your artistic profiles.

I hope to foster some new connections here, and to help the Las Vegas arts community grow in unexpected ways.

Thanks for participating!
Birdie

P.S. There may be some "bugs" to work out as we all test the site. I think that all of the features are working well, but if you find any difficulty, please don't hesitate to let me know. I want to create the best possible site for YOU!

Strange fungal beasts...

...no, NOT the boys, the mushrooms!

Just a quickie update from Ranchito Perogi:

Bignsmall

The boys hold two of the fungal fruits of our spontaneous mushroom hunting labor. Mr. 11 is holding a freshly picked morel! Morels in August! Unheard of! Our monsoon season is well underway, with heavy rains most afternoons. We actually picked this morel across the street at the public library park. Crazy days.

Mr. 13 is holding a giant puffball, another northeastern New Mexican delicacy. You can cut slices of large puffballs and use them as "bread" for raw sandwiches. They are also delicious cut, sauteed and gently simmered in soup.

We're planning an all-out mushroom hunt this week. Shaggy manes and boletes are in season, in addition to the lovelies above.

caught in oil

Didi Menendez has painted an oil portrait of me for her American Poets collection. Please visit and let her know what you think.

I am grateful that she did this, for many reasons.

I hope to post a story soon, sorry for my silence.
